The Five of Cups

The Upright Meaning
Worry and regret, disappointment and loss. Broken engagements and emotional letdowns. Confusion, frustration, feelings of vulnerability. Karmically, unresolved conflicts and/or patterns of behavior surfacing once again for attempted resolution. A need to re-order and reevaluate priorities.

The Reverse Meaning
A way of life overturned; private emotional adjustments. New alliances and expectations. Friendship which could lead to love. Anxieties caused by unexpected and rapid change. Trouble from unexpected sources.

The Singular Meaning

The Five of Cups points to the fragility of relationships and emotions, and of love itself. The disappointment is in the lost love, the broken promises, the bleak future. Emotions are intense, and often turned inward in anger and sorrow. This can lead to excess in any or all forms. It is important to remember, however, that all disappointments are but learning experiences. With the appearance of this card, it is conceivable that the possibility of a breakup was always present, but the signs were either ignored or kept hidden. Rather than spend all the time brooding over what has happened, now is the time to sit back and assess in a dispassionate manner what happened and why. In this way, perhaps it can be avoided in the future.
