The Upright Meaning

Use of special talents for new careers, hobbies, gains. Cooperation; good management; innovation through combination of elements. Adaptability, flexibility, balance. Awareness of a special occult gift. Living the ordinary life in an extraordinary way.

In love questions, it indicates a transition from a lower level of love to a deeper level. Also indicates an awakening to the whole of Universal Love, and that which is of theUniversal in all of Man.


The Reverse Meaning

Too much concern for physical and material matters of the self; failure to understand others. Poor judgment; mismanagement. Energies scattered in too many different directions; attempting to unite incompatible activities or people; trying to blend things that won't be blended, like water and oil.

The card Temperance can be summed up in the the following way. "Visit the interior parts of earth: by rectification thou shalt find the hidden stone." This is seen as a division of two elements. It was to be a talisman to be used whenever necessary, for its form was of both pure adaptability and rigidness of purpose. "Visit the interior parts of earth" is both a direction in the scientific alchemical formula, and also a directive to go within the self. In this vein, finding the "hidden stone" is a reference to revelations that can arise from deep meditative trances and dream states; the inner voice that counsels and guides.
